Why am
I so passionate about this page? Seems kind of crazy right?:) I have been
researching other concepts of how to improve pain levels, change muscle
patterning, and keep stability for a long period of time. In the next week I
will post some videos (on our facebook closed group ) I found addressing the big WHY do I have so much pain
still or how can I stabilize even if my dysplasia is mild? Many of us are left
to figure things out on our own. It can be a very frustrating experience
mentally and physically. You rely on the medical professionals to figure out
our issues yet for some of us we seem to be categorized into "just live
with it" or " just medicate the pain. “We are injected, poked,
prodded, and sometimes no answers are the conclusion. I am stubborn and
persistent and I don't believe this needs to be the case. If we can figure out
why we still have dysfunction despite the anatomical fixes we can help
ourselves to be functional and active with less pain. Perhaps we can avoid
surgeries that were unnecessary. Perhaps we can educate the medical
professionals to work with each other in understanding this diagnosis and bring
the functional medical professionals to work with the surgical professionals.
We can educate the public on pain treatment so that we are not stigmatized into
a category of addiction and mental problems. In short maybe we can prevent
depression and debilitation of patients with this diagnosis by empowering the
patient through education and understanding of biomechanics.
The
videos and reference material will be mostly books and training videos for
medical professionals. Lay people may not comprehend some of the terminology.
If you are working with a trainer, physio, or osteopath these might be concepts
you should discuss with them. I have been in treatment a long time. I have had
various physical therapists and surgeons try to help me. Each one brings their knowledge.
Some are not as adept in understanding muscle control issues. On Wednesday I
had a spine surgical reevaluation. He asked me, “What do you think the problem
is Linda because if I take out the slight stenosis you will develop more
problems above the site of surgery? " That was the first time anyone has
ever asked me a question on my own thoughts. He has been involved in my medical
case for the last 5 years watching me through the entire process, from the
initial correct dx to the last surgical fix. I felt rather empowered when he
asked me this. I felt like I can fix this myself. Mentally I felt I have some
control. I continue to have some pain issues and they migrate through different
joints in my body. Some days are really bad and others I feel normal and low
levels of pain. I now have a shoulder issue. I told him," It's a motor
control and function issue and not a strength issue. I can power through just
about anything even until my hip falls out of the socket or a disc pops out a
little. My body is a master compensator. I was wired from birth this way. I
don't want to have any surgery unless it's necessary. I want to stop this
patterning. I want to have some control over this body." I said. With that
he gave me an order of physical therapy. He said he’d see me in six months if I
still have pain and they will look deeper into the soft tissue if it continues
to be a problem. So again, why am I so passionate about this page some ask? If had been given the right information I could have saved myself a lot of money,
energy, and maybe extra corrective surgeries. A high percentage of back
surgeries fail. Why? Because we fix the damage, but we keep old muscle patterns
leading to dysfunction and abnormal wear and tear. It is my belief if we fix
old muscle patterning of our hips after correction we can save ourselves from
further surgeries or possibly replacements or revisions. We rely on the
expertise and trust of our surgeons and physical therapists and the rest is up
to us.
